An early autumn break on Scilly is one of the loveliest times of year to visit. The turning bracken gives vibrant variety of colour to the landscape. Unique to this holiday will be an exploration of the uninhabited island of Samson (either a whole day or half day, weather permitting). This island has a remarkable collection of prehistoric cairns, some of which have been excavated, but is best known for the remains of several farmsteads which were occupied until the mid-19th century, and which have been the subject of detailed survey and some excavation. Many present-day Scillonians are related to families who once lived here. Dated stones of the 18th and 19th centuries will also be seen. Prime Minister Harold Wilson once held an international press conference on the island!
Full days will be spent exploring the inhabited off-islands of St Agnes, St Martin’s, Tresco and Bryher, and a half-day will be spent on St Mary’s itself.
